When it comes to keeping trees healthy, safe, and looking their best, pollarding is one of the most effective techniques a tree surgeon can use. At J Carley Tree Surgery & Groundworks, we regularly carry out pollarding across Sussex and Kent, helping homeowners, businesses, and councils manage their trees responsibly.

What is Pollarding?

Pollarding is a tree management technique where the upper branches of a tree are carefully cut back. This encourages fresh, healthy regrowth while controlling the overall size and shape of the tree. Unlike a full removal, pollarding helps retain the tree’s presence while keeping it safe and manageable.

Why is Pollarding Important?

  • Safety First: Prevents large branches from becoming hazardous in storms or high winds.

  • Tree Health: Encourages vigorous, controlled regrowth.

  • Space Management: Keeps trees at a suitable height for gardens, roadsides, and public areas.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Maintains a neat, attractive look for years to come.

Examples of Our Pollarding Work in East Sussex & Kent

Hastings Pollarding Project

We recently carried out pollarding on a mature lime tree in Hastings that had become overgrown and top-heavy.

  • Before: The tree was towering over the garden, blocking out light and posing a potential risk in strong winds.

  • After: Following professional pollarding, the tree was reshaped and balanced, allowing more sunlight into the garden while ensuring it remains safe and healthy.

Robertsbridge Pollarding Project

In Robertsbridge, we worked on an Oak tree, that had grown unruly next to boundary line of a property and was overhanging an outhouse. The team were called by a homeowner that was worried about it damaging their property.

  • Before: The trees were leaning heavily and taking over the surrounding space.

  • After: After pollarding, the tree was trimmed back evenly, creating a tidy boundary line and preventing any future structural issues.
